The Marley Class-A Dual-Drive Headphones Amplifier, as the long name suggests, is a Class-A design. Audiophiles and DIY'ers know that Class-A gives sonic advantages over usual Class-AB, thanks to its high bias, but also makes designer face some challenges, first of all heat dissipation.
Those who visited the CanJam Europe in Essen and auditioned the Marley, could literally feel with their hand what this means: a unit running very hot.
The Marley dissipates around 30W idle, with a power capability of around 4W per channel on four channels (for experts: the figures just given let you understand that not all 4W are Class-A, but there is enough Class-A power to drive almost all headphones).
Class-A generally means more stability with respect to load's reactance, less intrinsic harmonic distortion, less distortion at low levels. These are all goals achieved in the Marley. Measured perfomances tell about 120dB SNR and 0.003% THD+N @ 2Vrms out. But this is about the whole signal chain, encompassing a bufferless integrated volume control before the amp. The power amp's actual performance are so better than the given figures, that the numbers actually reflect the volume control's performance.
The Marley amps use LSK170 ultra-low-noise JFET's on inputs and a design that exalts speed and detail. You will hear things, by the Marley, that no other headphones amp ever revelaed from your recordings. Just try it!

Il Marley Class-A Dual-Drive Headphones Amplifier, come il lungo nome suggerisce, è un circuito in classe A. Gli audiofili e gli autocostruttori sanno che la classe A offre vantaggi sonori rispetto alla classe AB normalmente utilizzata, grazie all'elevata polarizzazione dello stadio di uscita, ma obbliga anche il progettista a fronteggiare alcune sfide, tra cui la principale è senz'altro la dissipazione termica. Chi ha visitato il CanJam Europe a Essen e ha ascoltato il Marley, ha potuto toccare letteralmente con mano cosa ciò significhi: un apparecchio che scalda davvero tanto.
Il Marley dissipa circa 30W a riposo, a fronte di una capacità di erogazione di circa 4W per canale su quattro canali (per gli esperti: queste cifre fanno intendere che non tutti quei 4W sono in classe A, tuttavia c'è sufficiente potenza in classe A per pilotare quasi tutte le cuffie).
Classe A in genere significa più stabilità rispetto alla reattanza del carico, meno distorsione armonica residua, meno distorsione ai bassi livelli. Sono tutti obiettivi raggiunti nel Marley. Le prestazioni misurate parlano di 120dB SNR e 0,003% THD+N con 2Vrms di uscita. Ma queste cifre si riferiscono alla catena completa, che comprende un controllo di volume integrato senza buffer prima dell'amplificatore. Le effettive prestazioni dell'amplificatore sono talmente migliori che quelle misure in effetti riflettono le prestazioni del controllo di volume.
Gli amplificatori del Marley usano i JFET a bassissimo rumore LSK170 in ingresso ed uno schema che esalta velocità e dettaglio. Con il Marley sentirete cose che nessun altro amplificatore per cuffie ha mai rivelato dalle vostre registrazioni. Provare per credere!
